Ponytail palm is an exception to the rule that most species grown as bonsai must be kept outside all year. Not only can you keep it indoors all year long, but it also thrives in the typical winter climate found in most homes, which includes dry heat.
A very intriguing bonsai is the Ponytail Palm. The Ponytail Palm has a distinctive bulbous trunk despite not being a palm and instead belonging to the lily family. Its alternate name, Elephant’s Foot, comes from this trunk. The mature trunk’s texture and bulbous shape resemble an elephant’s foot. Due to the fact that it stores water in its trunk, this tree is hardy and extremely drought resistant.
Because it is so resilient and tolerant, this succulent has become a common houseplant. They maintain their compactness in a bonsai container without much effort, which is another reason they make excellent bonsai specimens. They grow slowly and don’t suffer when their roots are constrained. These plants get very little water in the winter in their natural habitat. Reduce the amount of water you give them in the winter to replicate this.
Several days should pass between waterings to allow the soil to completely dry out. Allow the soil to nearly dry out in the spring, summer, and fall before adding more moisture.
It works well as an indoor bonsai as well. Because of these characteristics, it is an excellent addition to any bonsai collection or a good first bonsai for beginners.
The Ponytail Palm can grow successfully indoors as a bonsai and needs a bright area with full or some sunlight. Keep them warm, especially when wintertime arrives. Since bonsai prefer warmer environments, keeping them on a windowsill in the dead of winter can be harmful to their health.
These trees thrive in either partial or full sun outdoors. Additionally, they can withstand some wind, particularly if the tree is older. When the temperature falls below 50 degrees Fahrenheit, it is advised to bring the bonsai inside. This can be done on a south-facing windowsill, in a greenhouse, or in a conservatory.
